How to create a .lens domain name

Lens protocol is the next-gen permissionless and self-custodial Social-Fi platform that allows you to create an NFT-like profile and interact with other such profiles on-chain. All of these profiles end in the .lens suffix, signifying their affiliation with the Lens protocol. It also means that we can’t simply buy a .lens domain name. Rather you’ll first need to create a Lens profile for which there’s a waitlist.

Originally, the profiles were given out for free during some community events called Snapshots last year in August. If you participated in that, you can claim your Lens profile at https://claim.lens.xyz/. However, if you missed it, there’s still some chance to acquire it now using the following methods.

1. Purchase an existing profile on OpenSea

Various Lens profile holders are looking to flip their profiles in hopes of making some profit. This is the most convenient way for you to get a Lens profile. However, you won’t be able to pick a name of your choice and there’ll be a price to pay even though initially they were issued for free.

2. Get whitelisted through Phaver

Phaver is the largest app built on Lens Protocol. If you stay active for a long enough time to earn a certain number of Phaver points, they’ll give you a chance to get whitelisted since they submit weekly applications to Lens for whitelisting. To earn these points, you can go to https://clique.social/provenance/phaver and complete simple tasks like engaging on their social media profile. Or you can simply stay active on Phaver’s discord server. The community members who reach the “Frens” role in this server automatically get access to Lens profiles.

The limitation of this method is that it can’t guarantee whether or not you’ll get whitelisted and how long it’ll take.

3. Sign up to the waitlist and watch out for upcoming airdrops and partnerships

The last method is to just sign up on https://waitlist.lens.xyz/ and hope you get whitelisted while keeping an eye on the upcoming partnerships since the partners often airdrop Lens profiles in their communities. Remember to opt in for email updates to not miss out on such announcements. This method requires the least amount of effort from your end.

Owning a lens profile goes beyond the social status factor. If you have a knack for content creation, you can create freely as there are no rules to limit you and you can monetize it freely.
