OpenAI just announced the removal of CEO Sam Altman due to issues with communication, according to the board of directors. Effective immediately, Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati steps into the interim CEO role. With five years of experience at OpenAI and a key role in its global AI leadership, Murati's appointment aims to ensure a smooth transition.

The decision to part ways with Altman follows a thorough review, revealing concerns about inconsistent communication that impeded the board's effectiveness. In a statement, the board expressed a loss of confidence in Altman's ability to lead the organization.

Greg Brockman, formerly chairman of the board, will step down but continue in his role at the company, reporting to the CEO. The board, composed of OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and independent directors including Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo, technology entrepreneur Tasha McCauley, and Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology’s Helen Toner, is actively searching for a permanent successor to Altman.

OpenAI, originally a non-profit founded in 2015, underwent restructuring in 2019 to raise capital while preserving its non-profit mission. As the organization faces this leadership transition, the focus shifts to Mira Murati as she takes on the role of interim CEO during this critical period.
