What is the Saga?

The Saga stands as Solana's flagship crypto smartphone, with a distinctive feature—the built-in Seed Vault, facilitating self-custody of assets and enhancing user experiences across decentralized applications (dApps). It was released some time in late 2022 with a capped supply of 20,000 units.

Quick Context

For about a year, the Saga phone faced subdued sales, struggling to capture market demand. It wasn't until late 2023 that interest soared when users discovered the opportunity to claim a 30M amount of $BONK airdrop through the Saga phone.

As the value of $BONK experienced a significant surge, users recognized an arbitrage opportunity where the airdrop could cover the entire cost of the Saga phone, effectively making the phone free. This realization triggered a buying frenzy, that by mid-December 2023, the Saga phone was completely sold out:

Speculation grew about additional airdrops potentially providing not only a free Saga phone but also additional rewards on top of it. Consequently, eager buyers and sellers flooded eBay, engaging in transactions at approximately 5x the retail price.

Is it Worth Purchasing a Saga on Secondary Markets?

With a 20k supply, approximately 4,500 Saga phones remain unactivated - some of which, are still being traded on secondary markets by those looking to flip.

With a current market value around 5x the retail price, the decision to purchase revolves around the expectation that airdrops from various Solana protocols will outweigh the initial cost (including potential logistical challenges with the seller).

Let’s discuss some of the pros and cons.

Pros

• Potential for Additional Airdrops: The prospect of more airdrops from various protocols.
• Direct Farming on Your Phone: Ability to farm protocol points directly using apps like Parcl and Tensor.
• Access to SagaDAO: Shared perks, including referral fees from trading bots like BonkBot and UniBot.
• Frontlines of Solana Ecosystem: Access to the latest features from popular dApps like Magic Eden, Jupiter, etc.
• Special Events in Solana Breakpoint: Inclusion in exclusive events.
• Potential Auto-Whitelists: Possibility of being auto-whitelisted for NFT projects.

Additional Note: There's significant potential for airdrops from new protocols seeking to incentivize an established user-base like Saga holders, contributing to speculative excitement. There will also be instances where airdrops ‘stack’ on top of each other.

For example, Sagamonke NFTs were available to those who activated their Saga to claim for free. In addition to this, other protocols provided perks to Sagamonke holders, such as in the case of ‘degencoinflip’ airdropping 1000 $SOL in risk-free plays to the NFT holders:

Additional Note: Concerns about dilution and accusations of a "cash-grabby" launch surround the Chapter 2 Solana phone drop (100k supply). However, since it's in early developmental stages with a projected 2025 launch, genesis Saga holders still have ample time for potential value accrual through airdrops and perks, in the meantime throughout 2024.

Ultimately, the choice to buy, sell or keep and use, is very subjective/personal - we’ve laid out the pros and cons, the potential risks and benefits. Given the speculative nature, it's essential to be comfortable with your chosen decision, regardless of the outcome.
