Sotheby’s Metaverse, a prominent auction house with a focus on rare NFTs and digital art, announced today that it would be auctioning off three pieces from the Ordinals art project known as BitcoinShrooms.
Conceptually akin to NFTs, Bitcoin Ordinals stand out by being rooted in the Bitcoin blockchain.
Unlike Ethereum or Solana NFTs, Ordinals derive their immutability from the decentralized infrastructure of Bitcoin, with the art stored entirely on-chain. To delve deeper into this, check out this insightful article.
Michael Bouhanna, VP, Head of Digital Art & Contemporary Art Specialist, announced via his X post that this auction would mark Sotheby’s first-ever sale of Ordinals.
As of now, bidding for the three BitcoinShrooms pieces ranges from $20,000 USD to $48,000 USD, and you can follow the auction here.
The artist, Shroomtoshi, has deliberately maintained anonymity, paying homage to Satoshi Nakamoto. Despite the mystery surrounding the artist, the BitcoinShrooms collection reflects a profound understanding of Bitcoin, evident in its cultural and technical references throughout.
An interview on the ord site provides additional insights into the collection, revealing it to bea collection of 210 pieces, each shroom piece narrating a unique story.
Shroomtoshi further shares his personal favorites within the collection, expressing appreciation on ideological, aesthetic, and emotional levels.
The auction is scheduled to run from December 6th to December 13th.
